Artist Statement

At its heart, the art I create explores our deep connection with nature and how our inner lives are influenced by the environment around us. This perspective runs throughout my practice, serving as a constant reminder that we are not separate from the world but intricately woven into its fabric.
Time spent in nature and journeys into the wild are key to my artistic process, and this is something I’ve done all my life. Even when lugging ridiculously heavy tents around in the Scouts, I loved the sense of adventure. Presently, whether walking through the local countryside here in Moray or spending time in more remote landscapes, these experiences help ground me and provide space for reflection. Being immersed in nature gives me clarity, offering the quiet I need to think, observe, and find inspiration for my work. Helping me to find balance in our increasingly digital lives.
I primarily use traditional woodblock printing, a slow and tactile process that allows me to develop a meaningful connection with the material. Each print, with its imperfections, mirrors the natural unpredictability of life. I enjoy the magical moment when you reveal a woodblock print for the first time, seeing how the carving has affected the result. I don’t try to control it too much, allowing the ink, wood, and paper to interact in unique and unforeseen ways.
Texture plays a crucial role in my work, significantly influencing its look and feel. My choice of a limited colour palette is deliberate, aimed at creating impact while subtly reinforcing the theme of interconnectedness. The visual design is just as important to me as the underlying concepts. I carefully consider composition, striving to balance form and meaning.
Even though I primarily create art to help myself understand the world, the themes I explore are often universal and open to interpretation. Inviting viewers to bring their own experiences to what they see. Ultimately, I believe art and the creative journey has the power to open dialogue and deepen our understanding of the unseen forces that shape our lives.
Thank you for taking an interest in my work; I hope you find something that connects with you.

As an artist, I strive to keep my environmental footprint as small as possible. I use non-toxic paint and wood glue, and I source paper from ethical suppliers. It’s an ongoing process, and I’m always looking for ways to further reduce my impact and waste. My current focus is on sourcing wood more locally.

Background

From a young age I’ve been drawn to visual creativity. Fascinated by the feeling it can evoke and how it helps make sense of the world around us.
I have a BA in Contemporary Art and an MA in Digital Film and Animation, and I’ve spent over 20 years mainly working in motion design for broadcast, digital, and experiential projects. I’ve been lucky enough to win a few awards along the way, and I’ve also had the chance to sit on BAFTA Scotland judging panels and teach Visual Communication at Abertay University.
Alongside my digital work, I’ve always had a passion for the more analogue side of things, inspired by hours blissfully lost in traditional photography darkrooms at Leeds Art College. A few years ago, I started exploring woodblock printing, and now it has become the foundation of my arts practice. Everything you see on this website is an ongoing expression of that.
